KEEP YOUR ENGINE PROPERLY TUNED

Changing the spark plugs on a vehicle that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve gas mileage by an average of 4.1 percent. If your vehicle has a faulty oxygen sensor, gas mileage may improve as much as 40 percent.

CHECK & REPLACE AIR FILTERS REGULARLY

Changing a clogged air filter can improve gas mileage by as much as 10 percent. In addition to saving gas, changing the air filter protects your engine.

USE THE PROPER GRADE OF MOTOR OIL

You can improve gas mileage by up to 2 percent by using the manufacturer’s recommended grade of motor oil. As an example, using 10W-30 motor oil in an engine designed to use 5W-30 can decrease fuel economy.

CHECK TIRES FOR INFLATION & WEAR

Tires that are under-inflated can have an adverse effect on gas mileage. In addition to keeping tires properly inflated, have your vehicle’s alignment checked to ensure your tires are wearing evenly. In some instances, it may be time for new tires.

CHECK YOUR VEHICLES GAS CAP

Approximately 17 percent of the vehicles on the road today have gas caps that are damaged, loose or missing, causing 147 million gallons of gas to vaporize each year.
